The Challenge
An Opportunity blocked by competing priorities
The experts at Appodeal saw an untapped opportunity with the top-notch features that the new SDK 3.3+ would bring. Moreover, the latest version included a new monetization algorithm that would get even more profit for the company.
However, like many developers juggling multiple projects, the team at Lucky Hamster Games had delayed the new SDK integration. On one hand, they had to carefully prioritize their workload as they leveraged with many other projects. On the other hand, there was some concern if the new version could potentially increase of ANRs (App Not Responding).
Usually, those problems are unrelated to Appodeal. Clients who had bad experiences with other ad mediation tools in the past have those same concerns. Fortunately, Appodeal has plenty of data confirming that ANRs are drastically reduced with every new SDK version.
Still, we needed to develop a solution for Supermarket Cashier Simulation that addressed their concerns. This would give them reassurance and a comfortable way to implement this new update.
The Solution
A/B Testing the new Monetization Algorithm in SDK 3.3+
The team of experts in Appodeal proposed a strategic A/B test to compare the performance of the old monetization algorithm (in the deprecated SDK version they had implemented in the app) vs. the new monetization algorithm in SDK 3.3+.
This way, the team at Lucky Hamster Games could see firsthand the improvements and boosts in performance metrics as they happen.
The test began by splitting the traffic 50/50 between the old and new monetization algorithms. The goal was to prove that the new algorithm in SDK 3.3+ could deliver higher revenue and better user experience.
To ensure the results were clean and unbiased, no changes were made to the visual elements or other metrics during the test, which allowed us to isolate the impact of the SDK integration.
Only one week later, the owners of Supermarket Cashier Simulator were convinced by the positive results during the A/B test period. We transitioned 100% of the appโs traffic to the new monetization algorithm.
This smooth and agile transition was key to maintaining the user experience while maximizing revenue for the game's creators.
The Results
The results were not surprising to our team but they raised the bar of Lucky Hamster Games LLCs' expectations.
By the first week, metrics showed a significant uplift:
Ad Revenue saw an important rise after implementing the new monetization algorithm on 100% of traffic.
ARPDAU (Average Revenue Per Daily Active User) also improved notably, showing that the new monetization algorithm effectively maximizes each active user's value.
eCPM (Effective Cost Per Mille) observed a consistent rise, thus proving that the ads being put out were now of higher quality and better adapted to the user base.
More important gains happened in their main geographic focus for the game - the U.S.A. The increase in revenue and ARPDAU has since steadily continued, showing the safe and lasting impact of the SDK 3.3+.
A month after the integration to SDK 3.3+, Lucky Hamster Games noticed how their game has been delivering higher-paying ads and more effectively monetizing its ad inventory. More than that, the new Appodealโs SDK optimization also led to a very visible boost in the app's gains per daily active user and a substantial increase in ad revenue.
This growth in key metrics proves how the simple and effective switch to Appodealโs innovative SDK has led to a significant financial improvement for the Supermarket Cashier Simulator game and, more importantly, allows a steady and reproducible growth in revenue.
